scribe post: day two of probability unit

hello everyone =), it's the one and only mark C, i am actually typing this two hours after i have finished my diagrams. The excitement is just about to begin =p.


For the Morning class we went over our poker probability sheet that we received on monday. Here are the answers and some guidance in to solving these questions.


Out of 10 straights, we only want
10, J, K, Q, and Ace, one straight. We have to choose one of the five cards for our hand. Since this is a flush we also want one suit.

I dont have an explanation for this one ladies and germs. i just subtracted A- I from the total possible ways to arrange the cards in a 5-hand

General rule: i never got a clear-cut definition for this term, but i think It means to work with one possibilty and then accounting for the actual number of possibilities.

After going over the poker probability worksheet, we did dictionary work.
here is what we wrote:


Invented by Pascal, his friend wanted to determine how much of a bet in a game he deserved. Pascal found the percentages so his friend could get the amount of the bet in the game he was playing.

Probability: The branch of mathematics that deals with chance.

Sample space: Set of all possible things that can happen for a given set of circumstances, presented by the Greek letter, CAPITAL OMEGA.

Event (E): A subset of the sample space, one outcome for a particular set of circumstances.

Simple event: The result of an experiment that is carried out in one step.

(What can happen)

Example: flip a coin, the result is heads

Compound event: The result of an experiment that is carried out in more than one step.

Example: flip a coin and roll a die-6, result is {heads, three}

Probability of an event

P(E) = # of favorable outcomes/ total # of possible outcomes (sample space)

Probability can be expressed as

- A ratio

- Fraction

- Decimal

- Percent


We began working in groups of four on problems to be handed in after the tie limit expired.

There were like 10 people missing from class, so everyone who was in class was planning to pick which flavours of bubble tea everyone would get. Man, was it funny. !0 min later, the ten people walk into the class room with loads of bubble tea. They had all sorts of flavours with their icy colors : green pale white, purple... and all the possibilities.

There was one flavour that, would seperate the great =) from the obnoxious and repulsive....yeap , its the one that made Mr. k turn red lol.


Well back to topic, we did a probability question near the end of class.

Here was our first question.

1)I have six marbles in a bag, 3 blue and 3 red. i draw one marble and put it back into the bag. What is the probability that i will draw a red marble? Simple, its 3/6 or 50 %

I draw one marble from the bag of six marbles. i throw that marble away, What is the probability of drawing a red marble (on the second draw)?

The answer depends on what marble i threw away, so we can draw a tree diagram and solve for the probabilities.

In probability when we say "and
" we multiply. When we say "or" we add.

Example1: What is the probability of getting a blue on the first draw and a red on the second draw?

Example2: What is the probability of getting a red on the first draw and second draw or a red on the first draw and a blue on the second draw

One of the most impressive things watching scribe posts in this class and my own is how some students feed off of each other. Congratulations on using scanners to show the cards and explain the concepts taught in class.

If I was taking this course by correspondence I would be as prepared as anyone who was in class.

It would be interesting to see if any of the previous scribes edited their work to make them all go over the bar at this height.

lol thank-you for using my scribe post as an exemplar. I'm not sure where i will take this but the idea of blogging has given me an idea to maybe make a blog with friends. the blogging we actually did in math class actually helped. As you can see we have scribe posts for ever school day that we had math class. The blog, to me replaces notes, but your inclass notes are still important. The blog is like an assurance that every student understands concepts and and has fun understanding it =). At first bloggin was not fun and most thought that it would take time away from homework or after school life. about half way through the semester every1 had fun with the blog and spent more time to beat past emperors. well thats all i can say for the moment. thank you to all teachers for looking at the blogging concept. Maybe in the future the way students learn will improve through all this technology. lol, i wouldnt be surprised when im older i see children and maybe my own blogging, what they learned at school. =)
